Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit seems an unlikely place for debates about sexual difference, gender roles, and family relations. But in fact, Chapter VIof the Phenomenology, subtitled “The True Spirit. The Ethical Order,” includes Hegel's discussion of these questions in his famous account of Antigone, a play and a character that continue to speak to us in strange and provocative ways. [REVIEW]Jocelyn B. Hoy - 2009 - In Kenneth R. Westphal (ed.), The Blackwell Guide to Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 172.

Children’s Ethno-National Flag Categories in Three Divided Societies.Jocelyn B. Dautel, Edona Maloku, Ana Tomovska Misoska & Laura K. Taylor - 2020 - Journal of Cognition and Culture 20 (5):373-402.
Flags are conceptual representations that can prime nationalism and allegiance to one’s group. Investigating children’s understanding of conflict-related ethno-national flags in divided societies sheds light on the development of national categories. We explored the development of children’s awareness of, and preferences for, ethno-national flags in Northern Ireland, Kosovo, and the Republic of North Macedonia. Children displayed early categorization of, and ingroup preferences for, ethno-national flags. By middle-childhood, children’s conflict-related social categories shaped systematic predictions about other’s group-based preferences for flags. Children (...)

    Once a French Speaker, Always a French Speaker? Bilingual Children's Thinking About the Stability of Language.Jocelyn B. Dautel & Katherine D. Kinzler - 2018 - Cognitive Science 42 (S1):287-302.
Despite early emerging and impressive linguistic abilities, young children demonstrate ostensibly puzzling beliefs about the nature of language. In some circumstances monolingual children even express the belief that an individual's language is more stable than her race. The present research investigated bilingual children's thinking about the relative stability of language and race. Five-to six-year-old bilingual children were asked to judge whether a target child who varied in race and language would grow up to be an adult who maintained the target (...)

Latent profiles of sleep quality, financial management behaviors, and sexual satisfaction in emerging adult newlywed couples and longitudinal connections with marital satisfaction.Matthew T. Saxey, Xiaomin Li, Jocelyn S. Wikle, E. Jeffrey Hill, Ashley B. LeBaron-Black, Spencer L. James, Jessica L. Brown-Hamlett, Erin K. Holmes & Jeremy B. Yorgason - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Emerging adult newlywed couples often experience many demands on their time, and three common problems may surface as couples try to balance these demands—problems related to finances, sleep, and sex. We used two waves of dyadic data from 1,001 emerging adult newlywed couples to identify four dyadic latent profiles from husbands’ and wives’ financial management behaviors, sexual satisfaction, and sleep quality: Flounderers, Financially Challenged Lovers, Drowsy Budgeters, and Flourishers. We then examined how husbands’ and wives’ marital satisfaction, in relation to (...)

Classical antecedents for modern metaphors for memory.Jocelyn Penny Small - 1996 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 19 (2):208-208.
Classical antiquity provides not just the storehouse metaphor, which postdates Plato, but also parts of the correspondence metaphor. In the fifth century B.C., Thucydides (1.22) considered the role of gist and accuracy in writing history, and Aristotle (Poetics1451b, 1460b 8–11) offered an explanation. Finally, the Greek for truth (alêtheia) means “that which is not forgotten.”.

Ambiguities in the subjective timing of experiences debate.Ronald C. Hoy - 1982 - Philosophy of Science 49 (June):254-262.
Some recent physiological data indicate that the “subjective timing” of experiences can be “automatically referred backwards in time” to represent a sequence of events even though the earlier portions of associated neurophysiological activity are themselves insufficient to elicit the experience of any sensation. The challenge, then, is to explain how subjects can experience what they do in the reported ways when, if one looked just at certain neurophysiological activity, it would seem that perhaps subjects should report their sensations differently. The (...)

Interpreting Modernity: Essays on the Work of Charles Taylor.Jacob Levy, Jocelyn Maclure & Daniel Weinstock (eds.) - 2020 - Chicago: McGill-Queen's University Press.
There are few philosophical questions to which Charles Taylor has not devoted his attention. His work has made powerful contributions to our understanding of action, language, and mind. He has had a lasting impact on our understanding of the way in which the social sciences should be practised, taking an interpretive stance in opposition to dominant positivist methodologies. Taylor's powerful critiques of atomist versions of liberalism have redefined the agenda of political philosophers. He has produced prodigious intellectual histories aiming to (...)

An Empiricist's View of the Nature of Religious Belief" (1955).

Animal production, especially pork production, is facing growing international criticism. The greatest concerns relate to the environment, the animals’ living conditions, and the occupational diseases. But human and animal conditions are rarely considered together. Yet the living conditions at work and the emotional bond that inevitably forms bring the farm workers and the animals to live very close, which leads to shared suffering. Suffering does spread from animals to human beings and can cause workers physical, mental, and also moral suffering, (...)

The question of whether problems with the social determinants of health that might impact decision-making justify denying eligibility for assisted dying has recently come to the fore in debates about the legalisation of assisted dying. For example, it was central to critiques of the 2021 amendments made to Canada’s assisted dying law. The question of whether changes to a country’s assisted dying legislation lead to descents down slippery slopes has also come to the fore—as it does any time a jurisdiction (...)
